Ben Lawrence
So I've been out a few times over the last couple of weeks roost shooting in the woods on my permission an not done to bad, a few woodies here an there, half a dozen tree rats a nice 3/4 grown rabbit that hopped within 3 yards of me before suspecting something wasn't right an running back the way he came. Made the classic mistake of stopping for one last look! Well it was his last. While I've been up there I've been watching the fields and I can say that in the four years I've been shooting here I've never seen so many pigeons, hundreds of them! thought to myself why not have ago at decoying them so made a plan of attack, packed the gear in the car the nite before an we was all set. Alarm went off at half five an I was up an rearing to go, flasks done me an the father in law were off. Got there set the hide up, got the decoys out all before it had even got light. Half hour later I had one pigeon down but that was it, we then sat there till half two freezing our nuts off having only seen 20 to 30 alday so we packed up an went into the woods for the last hour or so to see if we could get anything. After about half hour I had a little walk an noticed a few pigeons flying really low over the field we had been on so went for a closer look. Well now how's your luck, got to the edge of the wood an looked out to see a carpet of pigeons heads down ***** up. They stretched from one end to 3/4 of the way down the field. Went an got the father inlaw an said you ain't gonna be leave this his jaw nearly hit the floor when he see them right there where we had been only an hour ago! I have no idea of how many but after walking out an lifting them I'd say well over 500 an they jus dropped straight down in the next field. Maybe next time we're go abit later an stay for that last hour of light!!!! Lol
Cranfield
I don't find being on the field for pigeons at first light very productive, especially at this time of year, its my experience they want the frost off the crop before they are interested. Some fields can be morning fields and some afternoon fields, thats where the opportunity to recce the area comes in handy. At least you had a day out and some fresh air, I am sure you will have better luck next time.
tanjipete
in the warmer months ive shot good numbers early mornings but when its cold i dont find it as good as cranfield said earlier , i like to watch & determine the flight lines before setting up , but every day is different especially on the rape , its boom or bust lol can break your heart this time of the year

I've been watching a very busy group of fields for a few weeks, some days they are there at dawn, some days at 1.00pm onwards. If I'm there at dawn, birds arrive but won't commit, if I sit it out a few come in the end and I can get 10-20. If I go later, they have fed in the morning and I get very few. Either way, I'm wrong!! I agree, cold mornings they do seem to sit in the trees for longer, especially if there's fog, or nice sun to warm up in.
