winnie&bezza
Hi all, I,ve just bought a 20g and I'd like to give the oiled stock a lift and not sure what to use? Something that dries quick etc. cheers
clayman
Remove all the old finish with white spirits and 0000 wool . Stabilise the wood with walnut oil or alkanet oil. Grain fill with shellac sealer - and dye if colour tone change is wanted. Build with successive layers of either London Wax ( beeswax base) for mat finishes, or Carnauba Hi-wax if a shine is wanted. Quick fixes are with cellulose grain sealer and matt or gloss cellulose brushing finishes instead of wax.
Bobba
As you will have guessed from the good advice from Clayman, there is no quick fix to a good finish on a wooden stock. As it is already an oiled stock then I would remove the existing finish and use "Original CCL Traditional Gunstock Oil And Finishing Kit" to build up a new oiled finish. I removed the damaged baked varnish from my Miroku and used this kit. A labour of love but great satisfaction with the finished product which you created for yourself. winnie&bezza
Thanks for your advice and yes it sounds like I was asking for too much to just put something on it! Looks like hard work ahead!
