beefarmer84
Hi folks, Another year is upon us and much like last year I've so far been unable to catch myself a call bird. I've tried eggs in a homemade nest, bread, cat food and even a dead rabbit. Does anyone please have any suggestions or a spare call bird around the Leics/Warks/Northants border? wymberley
I get cracked eggs from the farm and a handful of hay which always works. Have you got anything 'sniffing about' which puts them off? Try raising the trap on anything convenient.
beefarmer84
I've got one compartment baited with a couple of quail eggs in a nest I made from some hay at the farm and the other compartment has a dead rabbit in it. In between the two compartments I've got my plastic decoy bird. I wouldn't think anythings been sniffing about as I've seen the magpies within the location of the trap but they just don't want to commit to seeing what it's like inside. wymberley
If you're still up against it, get rid of the decoy and bait both compartments with a nest/chicken eggs and give that a go is all I can suggest. Good luck.
beefarmer84
I wonder if the decoy has something to do with it.

Charlie1965
Try cracking the chicken egg open and leave the yolk upturned in half the shell. If you have a side entry trap it sometimes works if you put a mirror in the back of it and the pie attacks its own reflection.
beefarmer84
Unfortunately it's a top entry. I love the idea of it suddenly seeing itself and having a go! Edited March 25, 2015 by beefarmer84
ColinF
I'm near Towcester and will hopefully have a spare magpie in the next few days if you wanted to pick it up?
