Gilberts1989
I currently have a winchester model 70 in 22-250, it has a 16 inch barrel with a 1:14 twist. I have been loading 40gr VMAX with good results and 50gr blitzkings with excellent results, however, it is very hard for me to get these bullets and my rifle restricts me to no heavier that the 50gr bullets. Also accuracy is dramatically reduced at 250, I think due to the short barrel. Therefore I would like to do two things; 1) have a 20 inch barrel & 2) a faster twist, probably a 1:12 What are your thoughts on getting the winchester rebarreled? Or is it just worth getting a savage (the only rifles I have found that come in 1:12)
Underdog
The twist is fine. I would look at the rifle! The m70 is a good one but the slightest bedding issue and bang, the accuracy is gone!
Gilberts1989
I can't fire 55gr bullets out of it though. Edited April 23, 2015 by Gilberts1989
Underdog
It is capable. Is the barrel off the stock? Is there any polished witness marks on the barrel from the stock? Is the closed bolt handle touching the stock? Had many a rifle shoot light bullets but not heavy. Nearly always a bedding issue!
Gilberts1989
The action has been properly bedded. I had problems with the powder still being burnt after the bullet had left the barrel with V-N140 due to barrel length so moved to H335 and it seemed to do the trick. I have just found that howa do 1:12 24inch barrels so I'm now thinking about getting a howa action and barrel and dropping it into a grs stock. I don't really like the savage but it was the price that was attracting me to it.
Underdog
The op has not answered my questions. So crack on pilgrim :-)
Gilberts1989
Underdog, no none of your questions are applicable, everything is all good with the rifle
Underdog
Underdog, no none of your questions are applicable, everything is all good with the rifleThat's great then, so we can eliminate those from the problem. Now, do you think that with that 16" barrel in 22-250 it is capable of doing 3100 ish fps with the 55grn bullets? If so that's great because all my 222's shot 55 grn NoslerBT's sub 1" @100yds on 1/14" twist. Four makes of barrel. Around 3000fps. Also, you don't say how well it is shooting but imply that it gets worse at 250yds or Metres! What groups are you getting @100 and and then 250? Usually the group grows proportional plus some shooter error with added range. That is if the barrel is not becoming eroded! ATB. U. Rem223
I suspect Fister is correct and the velocity is marginal with such a stumpy barrel. I would try some 50gr Vmax if you cant get hold of Sierra bullets. Those Savage rifles are butt ugly and pretty crude but they invariably shoot really well. Rebarreling is OK if you like the gun but its not very cost effective in my opinion.

welshwarrior
Savages are easy to rebarrel but aren't pretty. Personally I feel the barrel is far to short 22-26" is where I preffer the 22-
Gilberts1989
Had a quote for a howa 24 inch varmint barrel and action and a GRS sporter varmint stock for £1000..... Bye bye Winnie me thinks! Bang a x-sight on top of that and it's starting to get pretty expensive haha, oh well can't take your money to the grave can you Edited April 24, 2015 by Gilberts1989
