will2490
Currently have a 4-12x50 AO with parallax adjustment on my rimfire, it does a grand job for bunnies but I'm thinking of a change. Is there any advantage in a variable mag scope over a fixed mag one (vice versa) or just down to personal preference? What's got me thinking is I've yet to shoot anything using the full 12x mag. So thinking do I really need it.
walshie
I think it's personal preference. 12x is a bit high for a rimifre IMO, considering the distances you will be shooting. I use a 6x42 fixed on my rimfire.

Many variable scopes do not appear to use the full diameter of the objective lens until the selector is set to maximum magnification, the advertised exceptions being made by firms like Schmidt und Bender; and 2. Fixed parallax scopes, all things being equal, will have greater latitude of eye relief, making them better for snap shots and easier to use for long periods I suggest, that if your current setup works well, leave it alone and save your money for ammo and vehicle fuel!
