M ROBSON
Hi Folks, I was at my work on Wednesday when one of my veg farmers phoned me and said he was having trouble with Roe on one of his Carrot fields, he'd chased 10 off it at lunchtime that day. This was a field I didn't know about as he was renting it from his uncle and wasn't one of his normal fields. Unfortunately as the field was not his I could only shoot the deer while his crops were in the ground and they would all be lifted within the next 2 weeks. Wish he'd told me sooner!! I met the farmer that night and he took me to the field, boy was there a lot of tops missing from Carrots!! I sat out for a Doe but nothing appeared. This morning I popped back along and there were 8 out munching away. After a half hour stalk I managed to get to about 150 meters away and dropped this nice pair of bucks. Cheers, Mark. M ROBSON
Thanks Guys. JRDS, I have seen quite a lot of clean bucks since the end of February but the 3 that were out in the bunch this morning were all still well in velvet. The buck on the right would have made a nice trophy but I can only shoot this particular field for the next 2 weeks, I don't shoot the land around it and these deer were making a real mess of the field. They had to be shot now. I had plans to go to a different Carrot field this morning, but that can wait for another day. Mark.

Holland&Holland
Lucky guy I wish i had farmer request like this. Keep up the good work. Do you have a certain amount of roe you can shoot? Or can you shoot them all if they cause damage? It seems a waste to shoot them all, some managing would be better. Is there an amount of hectares you have to have the shooting rights on to shoot roe? In the netherlands you will have to have at least 40 hectares on youre own to be allowed to shoot on. The government states this is the minimum space that can be managed. In Denmark you can shoot over 1 hectare if its youre property and (i think) 5 hectares of you lease it. It is possible to shoot f.i. 10 roe on 1 hectare in Denmark. To me that is strange. Sorry for all the questions but i like to know more and learn. H&H
M ROBSON
HH, I understand your interest. I answered the exact same questions to a German Pigeon shooting client this weekend, he couldn't believe we can shoot Roe deer for 12 months of the year and how little our stalking is restricted. There is no restriction here as to the size of land you can shoot, as long as it has been deemed safe for the calibre of gun you are using. I am protecting the crop on one field only in this particular area, it is a 15 acre field, in about half of the field the crops are already lifted. There are no limits to the numbers you can shoot also, if it is in season you can shoot it. I also believe if the deer are becoming a real big problem you can apply for a licence to shoot out of season and at night with a lamp. I'm not too clear on this though as I've never had (or wanted) to do it. Cheers, Mark.
Holland&Holland
Thank you for the reply. To me that is very strange (a.k.a. not used to it). If roe have a bad winter and are hungry you can whipe them out because they are feeding on the carrots. Or do you use youre own judgement in managing? M ROBSON
HH, We have had a very mild winter over here this year. The deer in the local area of this field have not been managed for a long time and have increased in numbers, there is a new nature reserve close by where they get sanctuary in the woods. I would like to have the time to manage this particular spot the same as I do my regular land but as I have mentioned the farmer wants them off his Carrots now, and I am limited to shooting this spot for just athe next couple of weeks. I just wish he'd told me about them sooner! Mark.

M ROBSON
Hi Folks, I've been out for my last 2 stalks on a new piece of ground for me, it's 700 acres arrable and 100 acres scrub/hill. The hill is a stalkers heaven, full of rock faces, birch trees, goarse patches and open areas of lush grass. I saw 3 bucks tonight, one of them a big guy, with what looked like really good volume to the main beams. He was in some scrum and a difficult stalk so I went for the easy stalk and took this buck instead who was in the wheat field nearby, 120 yards down a hedge row. He weighed in at 42lbs head and legs off. This was another buck from Friday morning, Cheers, Mark.
Suffolk shooter
Good Shooting again Mark, make sme want to run out the door, wheel spin away from the works car park and go get me some venison for tea. Seems your Roe have lost velvet, I know when I was out lamping the other night, ours still had their's in velvet. SS
