spandit
I e-mailed my local firearms department recently to enquire about some land clearances. I added a note to ask if they'd consider opening my licence too and got a reply back this morning, saying they'd be happy to consider it, if I give an account of my CF quarry shooting to prove I have some experience with it. Now, most of my quarry shooting is done with my rimfires so I don't have a massive amount of live quarry shooting with my .223. Would it be normal to have an open condition on the rimfire calibres only or should I wait until I can get the whole lot done?
Luckyshot
If most of your shooting is rf, just ask to have them opened for now and get the cf opened when needed. This is pretty common practice in some areas. Edited June 24, 2015 by Luckyshot
JimLondon
Have you shot any quarry with the CF? If you have then give them an account of what you've shot so far, ie what, where, when, safety considerations, before you took the shot,or not. spandit
This is what they've asked for: "I would be very happy to consider authorising your 'open' condition but could I ask that you provide an outline of your experience of quarry shooting with a centre fire rifle. This does not have to be an in depth 'log' of every outing - just a few paragraphs to show that you have had experience of live quarry shooting over a period and in differing conditions" I think that's fair, albeit a little open ended. I have done some with the .223 - I can only be honest and see if that's enough for them. Just obtained a large permission so should be able to get some more experience there. superspark
I have an open licence for my rimfire. I have just put in for a variation for a .223 as I have been shooting with my mate and his .243 over the past 12 months, mainly fox at night and early lit mornings. I am just waiting now to see what will happen when my ticket comes back. I added a letter explaining what I have been up to with a centre fire under instruction and why I want a centre fire rifle. I guess only time will tel. Best of luck with your pursuits.
