ESS "Crying" Question

We have had Aero now for 3 months (He is 15 months old). His training is comming on, not as fast as I would like but thats due to me being busy at work.

I have a couple of question. A little background first. Aero sleeps in a cage indoors and he also goes in the cage when we go out. He stopped crying with 3 weeks of being in the cage at night.

Q1. A neighbour has said whenever we go out during the day an leave Aero in the cage he cries non stop. My other dog is kept seperate from Aero when we go out, they dont see each other, for no other reason than we have never left the Lab in the living room when we go out. he stays in the hall. Any ideas? maybe let the lab stay where Aero can see him when we go out? Or will Aero grow out of it?

Q2. He still wets himself from time to time, mainly when you try and take a toy of off him, or when our other dog tries too. Any ideas about that? or will he grow out of it?

Q3. Castration. We are thinking about getting him castrated now, as I guess he is approaching the right age. What differnces can we expect from the dog? At the moment, when he get fruity, he tries in on with our Lab, frontways, backways, sideways anyways.

thanks in advance.

A1. It sounds that Aero is suffering from seperation anxiety. I would try crating the two dogs side by side to see if this helps, as it will only become worse if left unchecked.

A2. This can be two things; first is submissive behaviour, and second is a weak bladder. Some young dogs take a while for the bladder to gain full control and will have some leakage when excited. If this is the case then you will probably notice it when he meets new people or dogs. In this situation he would be very excited and in an upright standing or sitting position. If it is down to submissivness then his ears will be back he will normally be laying on his belly or rolling to the side or back.

If it is submissivness then to stop it you need to boost is confidence up if it is a weak bladder only time will tell.

Q3. Castration. We are thinking about getting him castrated now, as I guess he is approaching the right age. What differnces can we expect from the dog? At the moment, when he get fruity, he tries in on with our Lab, frontways, backways, sideways anyways

A3. All dogs react to being fixed differently. He may continue to hump your other dog or he may stop all breeding behaviour. In some cases it calms a dog dog slightly, but you will have to watch his weight and adjust his food accordingly, as fixed dogs tend to gain weight more rapidly than unaltered dogs.

Some superb advice there. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Point 1, which is the most important one at the moment. What I will do, as the other dog is not in a cage, is leave them both in the same, although Aero will continue to be in his cage.

I guess that would be the first step.

Once again. thanks for a great response.

How do you boost his confidence?

Bit of an update. I think we have the wetting itself more under control. Thanks to New To The Flock. We have stoped looking directly at him when trying to take stuff off of him, we also get down to his level. this has help alot. Thanks for pointing us in the right direction.

Where we have seen no change is the crying. because of where we live and the neighbours we have this could be a problem. We have tried the other dog in the same room as him when we go out but it seems not too have worked.

I think the crying is actually only a new thing. I have had no reports of it up until last week.

Any other ideas on what we can do? I dont want to end up getting rid of him :)
