marnold
Afternoon all! For you reloading gurus out there, I was originally looking at getting a a lee hand held case trimmer for my case prep, which would be ideal for my .223 cases, but they don't do a .17 Hornet case length gauge. So, I think my only option is a universal case trimmer so that I can do both .223 and .17 Hornet, like the Lyman Universal Case Trimmer? Am I correct? If so, how does it work with regard to setting the case length for trimming? Secondly, will I need any extras with the universal trimmer lime shell holder etc? Thanks in advance! Euget123
Ive been using the lymann you mentioned for 17 hornet! You dont need additional shell holders but will need a 17 cal pilot!got mine from brownells! Most of the lymanns online come with a set of "9 most popular pilots"this will cover you for your 223 but the 17 isnt included! ET

Euget123
Forgot to say. Setting up is very easy there is a lock ring on the trimmer bar that blocks it from going any further than your desired lenght once set. It takes a we bit of trial and error but once set its fine! You do get a bit of variation in lenght because of different rim thickness of the brass, but its tiny! ET

Vince Green
Gentlemen, the Lyman case trimmer is about a hundred quid! the LeWilson is nearly double that! How many cases are you really expecting to trim? If you are just neck sizing the chances are you will never actually need to trim your cases. I reloaded for over twenty years before I bought a trimmer and then it was the Lee. now its very rare that a once fired factory case or five times reload actually needs trimming except that the trim tool is undersize so metal is removed but its questionable whether it makes any difference to the end result . Sometimes we lose sight of what is BS and what is important, case trimming is 90%+ BS Edited July 20, 2015 by Vince Green
