Dry firing a rifle,good or bad?

air rifle? springed air rifles yes. As there is no pressure resistance from the pellet, it will hurl the piston into what ever is stopping it.

 

PCP's, i dont think so?

 

Rim/centrefires. im not sure? although iv seen people dry firing it without a round in the chamber.

Centerfire should be ok.

Rimfire, very bad you will put a nick in the breech face of the barrel as well as possibly damaging the pin.

Shotgun, rumuored to be bad, and may well be on old guns, modern guns should stand up to it though.

 

As has been said, spring air rifles no, PCP's should be ok :good:
