Powders for .222

Recommended Posts

In standard 222 data yes, which caters for weaker action types. In strong actions you can get a good gain over book.

are you suggesting a stronger action allows you to push bullets that much faster?

I have had three, one of which is built on the same action as the same model in .270 and 45-70 Gov....

its the brass that fails under pressure not the action

And unless you are pushing 40's at 3800+ and shooting over 300yds the advantages are negligible

if you cant consistently shoot groups or hit targets smaller than the trajectory difference at the range quoted then they are negligible (unless you are talking about something else then ignore me!)

Data for 222 is developed with the few weaker action types in mind. The HW 60 series is one that comes to mind.

The brass head is the same as 223 so as strong.

In strong actions it can be loaded above book with certain powders before pressure signs start to show.

How someone want to do that is for them to study up on.

Is it worth it? Not really.

We were shooting hundreds of rabbit back then to 300yds, then it was an advantage, but only then an advantage. A friend got a few good 400 yard shots I recall.

And err yes there was the accuracy, why wouldn't there be!

:-)

I don't recall and no longer have that note book but our favourite powder for 40grn ballistic tips was rl7. We worked it until primers started to really flatten. Case head expansion was close if not .004" (regarded a max back in the day) and cases gave a few reloads before primer pockets started to slacken.

I no longer would bother but we were young and even dafter than now, I mean there is no real need, it was not dangerous. I had just as much success with standard loads!
