BRYAN3 Posted August 31, 2015 Report Share Posted August 31, 2015 Help please. Hello Guys. This year for the first time I have grown swiss chard,and eaten it. Trouble is though it tastes a bit strong with a bitterness to it. Is that how it should be? What am I doing wrong? FalconFN Posted August 31, 2015 Report Share Posted August 31, 2015 I grew some a year or two ago and I had the same problem, it was bitter and tasted almost soapy. I have no idea why it tasted so bad but haven't bothered since. I have grown pak choi instead - brilliantly versatile and tasty stuff it is. lord_seagrave Posted September 2, 2015 Report Share Posted September 2, 2015 If you find traditional white-veined chard a bit bitter, go for a red-veined or yellow-veined version instead. Wash it well and cook it straight after picking - the garden varieties don't keep we'll at all. You might just get a crop if you sow some now in a sheltered spot (although I'm on my phone and can't see your location - you may have to ignore that advice if you're in Shetland). Also, try saving your seed. If you do find a mild-flavoured specimen, leave it to go to seed. You will have to stake it though, the flower stems grow to about 5' tall! I also buy the mixed colours as the kids find that more fun. I also get loads self seeded. cook a nice load of leaves, poach some good eggs and burst the yolk over the leaves, salt and pepper ...... a great dinner.
