Popgun
I have been given a 3.5 year old cocker from good field trial lines, his father is a FTCH. he has never been trained and has been left to free hunt, he catches lots of rabbits trashes heavy cover goes a bit death when on hot scent but is starting to come to the whistel. he came from a non shooting home they could not handel him. is it possable to train him to make a reasonable beating / rougth shooting dog. i have had 4 cockers before and they all made good beating/rougth shooting dogs. i have just got a 9 week old cocker pup as well. i have a few training books but they dont cover older dogs, any suggestions on books or training greatfully recived
new to the flock
Start at the beginning, gain leash control and all the other obediance factions so that he is working well beside you , then in the garden, then in a small paddock or field and finally in an open setting and you should have no problems NTTF

deeksofdoom
Don't exercise the younger dog with the older dog until he is well under control, if the younger dog see's the older fellah running wild he'll start doing the same thing.
