rwade545
I have a 14 month old lab, have been training him up till this point and although he is pet for most of the year the plan is to take him rough shooting. He loves his training and retrieving of dummies. Thought I would try and introduce some cold game as he is liable to mess about to judge his reaction is an enclose space. He sniffed the pheasant and then just walked off. Now he brings dead black birds etc thst he finds on walks back. What do people here suggest? Will be going back to his trainer for more advice in a few weeks, but as its game season the trainer is often working his dogs at weekends so time is limited. Cheers Edited October 11, 2015 by rwade545

Spoonbed
With a reluctant retriever, I would start with a partridge, put it in a old( tied) sock, and just let the dog run in on the retrive( make it as much fun as possible to excite the dog) Then little by little expose more and more of the partridge from the sock( secure the sock around the bird with an elastic band) After a few retrieves, hopefully the dog won't take any notice, and will retrieve happily. Then repeat( if needed to) with a hen pheasant, then a cock bird. Obviously make sure the dog isn't crunching the birds, and dispose of them before they get too "manky"
