Stimo22
Hi Jamie Too big a subject for a single reply. There a several good books on the subject out there. Where about son the country are you. I make quite a few and use Hazel, blackthorn, hawthorn , and holly for shanks, they need to dry out in a cool shed for at least 12 months per inch of diameter. I then straighten in a steam tube and the fit the head like a piece of antler with a horn spacer then you need a ferrile and oil.

Stimo22
Jamie I see you are after some antler, I have a problem with this and get mate to check car boot sales. But you do not have to stick to antler, attached is a photo of some that have wood tops, made from good hardwood, the one on the left was red ebony, the crook was cherry and the pheasant head was walnut. There is also one from cow horn with a woodcock badge in resin in the top. Good luck with your quest Stimo
