Wingman
I made some... Acetone (from a hair and beauty supplier) ATF Dexron III type from Halfords White Spirit Petrol (as I had some already) My ratios were as follows ATF 40% Acetone 30% White Spirit 20% Petrol 10% I added a fair bit of acetone as its the main ingredient that provides solvent abilities. The ATF has a petroleum oil base so I dont think the parrafin or kerosene would add an awful lot anyway. Lanolin is a great idea as the acetone content will degrease very well so a good residual lube is needed to avoid rust... The mix above seems to be very effective at removing fouling although it stinks so use is a well ventilated area.. And avoid lighting a fag when your using it!!! figgy
The aft fluid is supposed to be oil and lubricant left behind to prevent rust. The mix shouldn't need lanolin. I have some in a small spray bottle sold by a forum member a while ago and it works well.
Savhmr
Can't think why one would bother with the trouble of a diy product when so many good products are available off the shelf which will last ages themselves. One tin of sheath rust preventative (applied with a rag to all external surface and to the inside barrel after cleaning and before storage) and a bottle of Wipeout...job done. I've had a tin of inexpensive sheath rust preventative for years and it wasn't expensive. Anyone thinking of using petrol or some of these other ingredients should also be aware of the very real health risks in handling them, or breathing the fumes. Unleaded petrol contains Benzenes which are very harmful to health. Acetone is extremely nasty too and prolonged or regular exposure use can cause long term respiratory problems and dermatitis. You also need to be sure that none of the chemicals listed will react to cause any damage, either with powder residues, each other or whatever. Those with chemistry knowledge may be able to better comment, but on reflection...why bother with them?
