robben77
Is it possible to darken the wood on a gun if it's a bit light for my liking? Thanks
arjimlad
After stripping back the varnish on my old AYA I used Van Dyke crystals to stain the stock darker. Then re-finished it with an oil finish including alkanet oil.
1 shot willie
Hi robben. Yes it is possible. There are spirit based or water based stains that will do the job. Be careful with selection of colour as some will darken beyond what you may need with several applications.....( Better to build up your colour rather than try and hit it in one ) Once you have gently stripped your varnish/Lacquer, give the wood a good clean with fresh water or white spirit, depending on the solvent you have used to strip. Leave for a few days to fully dry. Give the wood a rub with some 00 wire wool, dust off. Before applying your new stain, wipe the stock over with either water or white spirit until the wood is a uniform colour and the same moisture content. ( you don't need to soak it) Then apply your stain with a cotton rag quickly and evenly. The application of water or spirit before hand will allow even application of the stain. Build your colour until you are happy with the end result. Rub over with 00 wire wool when the stain has dried, dust off carefully, use a tack rag if you can. Apply the finish you want and jobs a good un You can grain effect and blend the wood with some darker stain, but I would practice that on a bit of scrap first Good luck hope it goes well. robben77
Excellent thanks! If it's on a oil finished stock can you just put a dark oil on?

ditchman
im not suggesting you should do this but ive seen some fine examples of it ...(mostly american)....and that is using alcohol, dowsing it on the bare wood and setting fire to it and finishing it with a gas blowlamp...then rubbing down and staining it.....................i would like to have a go with an old rubbish stock to see what happens.. what i should add it is used more for bringing out what is hidden and already there...not making something out of nothing..........
