My planned hunting trip

Right guys, I haven't been shooting for ages mainly due to exams but partly due to me not feeling comfortable with my marksmanship. I have practiced somewhat, decreased the range I was trying to shoot over and in under 2 weeks will have all my uni exams out of the way. So some shooting is in order!

I have 2 permissions, one which is completely open fields with no cover and (in feb) had cabbages & sprouts with some pheasant cover at the top. The other I have never shot over which if i remember, was cabbages & sprouts again, but a bit more natural cover and trees.

Now whenever I used to shoot the first, I always noticed a flightline for both rooks and pigeons which runs across the centre of the field. So my plan is to purchase some rook decoys and throw down some bread hopefully drawing them in, with me hidden under a camo net at a known range which my scope will be pre zeroed.

Second plan, is to use the good old nest with broken egg trick alongside a maggie decoy to draw in any maggies.

Finally, when I was there in jan I was walking around the field and saw a rabbit bolt from the edge of the field into the orchard. Now we have no warren's on my shoot I know that for a fact so would a lone rabbit stray from the orchards into the field? I am hoping that on a quiet day we might catch the odd one although if farm work is busy then doubt they will be out.

I am going to chat with the farmer as I know he has a fox problem (uses 12G to get the *******) and see whether baiting a known area would be a good idea, then he (or me if I get my SGC) can catch them on the off chance or ambush them.

So lads the big question, is there any major holes in my plans? I am really inexperienced so would love for you to spot any obv errors before I go out shooting! I am going to ask whether they're any particular area's he has had problems recently or wants me to focus on.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Sounds good in theory. Just learn from any mistakes or if they don't come in then don't be afraid to change tactics.

Just make sure you are well camoflauged. Some corvids are wary of any new structures so a green lump (you) appearing in a field overnight might get them worrying. It is best to construct a hide a few days before hand and let them settle.

Thanks, snakebite what do you guys use for a hide? I was considering getting a piegon hide/blind but that won't cover me up from above and I cant swing like you can with a shotgun.

Thanks again,

Dan

Just a tip...take a flask of your favourite beverage (Tea/Soup) and get yourself some good ol'e camo netting. Ebay is good and cheap for this...! Otherwise the plan sounds fine, ull get better as you do it more and more. also if you've got any DPM jackets or clothing then wear it - it helps.

Thanks,

Dan

So my plan is to purchase some rook decoys and throw down some bread hopefully drawing them in,

On the BASC website it says that they do not advocate the baiting of fields when shooting pigeon or crows.

Just a thought does anyone else do this

just as well I am going after Rooks then isnt it :good: At the end of the day my view is, when the problem exists you are going to go for the most effective method to solve it. Should that involve baiting, I may well do. Although will see how the decoys work alone first but if needs be....

Where does it say this? Not calling your bluff but I have never heard this before.

When carrying out pest control as opposed to "sport" isn't it o.k. to bait the field?

Might be worth starting another thread if there is enough intrest.
