Guest georgehare
Does anyone know alot about these rifles (preferably in .243) and are they any good ? seem pretty good for the price (being screwcut and re-proofed) EDIT: Should be 'Vanguard'
dunganick
they are the same as the Howa 1500 basically, just a different name (or this is my understanding of them) and as such you would probably save money by buying a howa.
Sako7mm
Definitely the Howa, with a different stock. Buy the Howa and save enough money for mounts and a few boxes of bullets! The Howas have a much better choice of stocks as well. every report I've seen indicates good barrel quality. They seem very good value. dunganick
they are nicely made, and in theory shoot very well. mine did for the first 50 shots, since then its been nothing but a living hell. want to love hte gun, but i cant. want to get mine sorted and sell it. dunganick
not entirely sure at the moment, but one of the lugs started fouling and as a result it started wearing away metal and it would not close with a live round (factory or handload) in the chamber (not interested in peoples solutions as i dont have gun at the moment ) my main concern was the way it shot 1 hole groups for the first 50 shots then shot 3 and 2 style groups after that. Just got anoying, but if i get my gun back i will give it another try, i think there are some good ones out there.
dunganick
Lets face it, you can pick up a tikka varmint stainless for £675My Howa varmint cost £600+£80 for a tikka equivalent quality trigger and was absolute ****e start to finish. It had evrything done to it that could be, re-crown, pillar bed etc and never shot anything like as well as the tikka would have(they are guaranteed to do sub inch). It is the only centrefire rifle I have ever owned or shot that wouldnt shoot better than i could shoot it, from a 22 hornet to a 338 lapua magnum. Sorry but that is my honest opinion. I wont go back and have met several people with the same attitude. It was also covered in rust from stalking before I got back to the hotel in the evening. Now I know stainless isnt truly perfect but this was bad............ This was monkey metal. I got rid for 300 quid to a dealer a few weeks back and sold the trigger(the only good bit) to Dunganick. When the dealer offered me 300, i nearly bit off his hand and ran. The worst bit is that someone at my club has bought the ****** from this dealer and i feel sorry for him already. A couple of people offered to buy it on this forum and when It came to it, i just couldnt sell it to them with a clear concience. and unfortunatly i can say i bought the only good bit of my gun from fister im hoping for a refund really and then going to spend more money and get a gun that works. Just glad i got this gun for next to nothing.
mry716
Fister, Do remember the Weatherby Vanguard is the same and that has a 1" at 100 guarantee the same as you say Tikka do. I know 8-10 folk with Howas in various confoigurations and none have had anything but praise for them. I bought a 300WSM to rebarrel to 325WSM but before I did fired a few shots - here is a group http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/mry...5WSM/300WSM.jpg The origiinal barrel is now back on and the rifle is presently at proof. On return it is for sale so how about a S/S 300WSM that does shoot for £350?
rarms
Go with a Remy 700. Buying into a big name, many accessories available from the states and v. popular if you decide you no longer like it and want to sell it.
Dunkield
I agree with Fister, get something that shoots out of the box like a Tikka, unless you want a project gun to fill up your spare time and money. . .
