A couple of Jacks

This morning I had a few irritating errands to run but got them out of the way quickly enough to sneak a bit of time on a club lake with a mate. We'd first met when I rescued his prized lure from a snag with my kayak and this was the first time we'd fished together. It was gloriously sunny for the morning, and I made good use of it! I got these two in the first two swims we tried, much to Greg's annoyance - he'd recommended the type of lure I was using, but while the pike ignored his, they were all over mine!

After that it died off, however. Neither of us had even a follow. But just as we were calling it quits - and after Greg's reel had broken - he finally hooked and landed his own jack. Three fish between us in a couple of hours isn't too shabby, so we called it quits there as it was also about to chuck it down! To be honest I wish we'd stayed longer. I had to leave to watch Reading FC play. They were utterly shambolic. An embarrassing 2-0 loss at home in the pouring rain. Oh well. Time to hit the pub

Nicely done. So what was the lure?

Savage Gear 17cm Hybrid pike. One was on the Red Copper with a paddle tail, the other was on the fire tiger and the eel tail. The latter is my Scavenged Gear lure - I liberated it from 15ft up a tree over water where some loon had snagged off. I climbed up to get it!

Thanks for the info, I have never used those sort of lures I rarely spin but when I do I still resort to my ancient collection of Abu spoons and plugs.

I know those work as the bloke from Savage was giving a demo of them at Sportfish and hooked a monster perch.

The hybrid is a belting lure. Greg's had over 100 pike since October on the Red Copper colour. His red is a proper beaten up thing! It was that prized lure i rescued for him. Truth be told, these are the first fish I've caught off them. They are dreadful casters; getting distance is like trying to speed in a reliant robin. If you've got a following wind, you might get something decent out of it! This winter I've had more success for pike on perch lures, particularly grub tails.
