archiebald
After buying an old black powder hammer gun i am now looking at reloading the cartridges (£29 a box plus post!) im questioning myself if it it worth the hassle getting a black powder certificate if I will be only using it occasionally, so im interested to find out more about pyrodex. Is there a big difference in terms of their usage? as in performance, noise and smoke? Cheers.
Velocette
I find Pyrodex fine,,,just be very thorough washing out and cleaning the bores afterwards. West Yorks made such a fuss about me needing experience in loading black powder before they were willing to issue a certificate, despite me loading Pyrodex for some while now, I gave up that idea. They suggested I join a club for a while to gain the practice they felt I needed ! It doesn't produce as much smoke as black powder though. Do you use a lee loadall to reload with pyrodex? I hear its not safe to use one with black powder.
Zapp
Seconded re cleaning thoroughly after using pyro, it is seriously corrosive.
archiebald
I will do, I'm careful with gun cleaning. The gun is from late 1800,s so will be cared for! Does pyrodex have same pressures as bp?
TONY R
More or less the same as black, With CTG and RS , I never used any but think Tripple seven is a bit more powerfull just something i was told never looked into it.
archiebald
Thanks, I was told that too and it needs weighing. Is trod ex measured by volume in same ratio as black powder?
Tom R
Measure pyrodex by volume not weight. What ever volume of BP use the same for pyrodex. Try and get a BP ticket though as you can't beat the BP smell. Edited May 6, 2016 by Tom R

Livefast123
I always used Hodgdon 777 and found it really easy to clean with hot water. You need to reduce the volume by 15% over BP loads as its got more poke.
