Vince Green
Indeed, if native white clawed crayfish are present in the catchment, the EA won't give a licence. But the native crayfish are not going to be there anymore are they? That's just being overly cautious because the American crayfish wipe out the native crayfish immediately. AFAIK there are no mixed areas. By here there is the River Chess and its full of Signals. Every Sunday morning you will find twenty or more people on the river bank by Croxley water meadows pulling them out by the bucketful but the EA won't give them licences (allegedly). On the other hand they don't appear to be doing anything to stop them fishing for them either. So maybe that's how the EA are dealing with it, look the other way and avoid all the paperwork. Anything for a quiet life. There is a 'bloke in the pub' who lives on a canal boat adjacent to the water meadow who says the canal is full of them as well but the boat people wont eat them because all the boat people pee in the canal. That's the Grand Union so if they are in the canal system they are all over the country by now Edited May 12, 2016 by Vince Green
Penelope
I know, I know! Hate the things with a passion. They have destroyed many of my favourite fisheries, to the point that I do not fish much anymore as it become all but impossible to keep a bait in the water. They help grow big fish, but ruin recruitment. I have trapped them in the Lea, Stort and gravel pits in said river valleys and do not or have not had a licence.
