Yesterday morning i received a phone call from a friend " I've got a Farmer here with a Goose problem can you Help. I was a bit mystified as this Farmer lives 5 minutes from my house but i arranged to meet him in a hour when he got back from the shop. Knowing the area and Geese like the back of my hand i was still puzzled to the problem. After a introduction we went to see the problem to say I was gobsmacked is a understatement basically the grass/washland was bare as a Bowling green with 400+ Greylag 100+ Canada and 37 Egyptian Geese which as we drove along they all dispersed to the Gravel Pit's.

I already shoot a mile or two further up the river and when it floods Geese do feed on the grass but mid to late winter but I was still miffed why was all these Geese on the grass now. Given permission to go when I wanted and could also shoot the Duck as I had already arranged to go elsewhere last night i said as it was legal to shoot on Sundays here I'd have a go Sunday morning mainly to see what was happening.

5.30am this morning i stood listening to the Geese on the Gravel Pit's the penny dropped my belief was these Geese was going to feed on stubble an hour or two later going back to the pit's THEN after a Wash and brush up flighting on the grass for the day !!!!!

6.05am my theory was proved right as the Geese speed over with a nice wind up there rears for distance Stubbles across the river with the amount of Geese it was only a matter of time before I'd get a shot sure enough my chance came wether it was my complacency or the sheer speed that caught me out but my first shot found thin air the next two found there mark whilst my dog retrieved the Geese Greylag and Canada streamed by

Having never shot at a Canada with the new 20ga i kept leaving Greylag but the Canada's kept going either side finally temptation got to much no complacency this time as a Skien of Greylag lost three of its number followed by a cracking high single.

Well chuffed i walked back to my Truck half way back across the river i saw 30 odd Greylag 7 Canada and 2 Egyptian feeding near some cattle as i watched them the Farmer drove into the field quickly getting tucked into the steep river back I watched as the Geese jumped flew to the river then up it straight at me.

Now these Geese was heading into the wind 25yrd up when well onto me i picked a Egyptian that fell picking a White and black head that fell a orange bill suffered the same fate my shout's of excitement attracted the Farmer who jumped in his land rover and speed to the river.

As my dog was retrieving the Geese he shouted are you alright mate yes i replies Thank god for that i thought someone was in trouble after a shouting conversation across the river he remarked Good Man shoot the ******* lot of them Geese there a right pain in the Butt.
