Wingman Posted September 5, 2016 Report Share Posted September 5, 2016 I bought another old A5 a few weeks ago and started the strip down and refinishing process, progress had been little slow but made a start on the wood. The gun is a 1950's model in good nick mechanically but the wood was nasty years of crud and grime worn chequering and smelt of cats pee! I soaked for a week in white spirit and it improved slightly and then as I have a few spare stocks I decided to give it a go with oven cleaner. I know it will be probably frowned upon and I would never recommend it for a valuable gun but it seemed to work well enough. I wasn't after a show piece this will be a working gun for rough and pigeon shooting so I wasn't expecting a perfect finish but I think it's turned out pretty well! Thought I would give it a bash seemed to strip off all the **** but no doubt did horrible things to the wood and it will probably dissolve into dust in a few months time!!! impala59 Posted September 6, 2016 Report Share Posted September 6, 2016 I think its great that all these old guns are getting a new lease of life, the only danger is that once restored and looking good the values will go up and there will be no more cheapies for projects. Still can't quite warm to the A5 though (although I did buy a couple of A5 recoil springs for a different project, so I do have a bit of an A5!)
