Richie10
Do putting over shot cards or felt wads under the crimp affect pattern? I have done this previously to make a tighter crimp, but would this affect the pattern? Thanks
super sharp shooter
To be honest i can't notice the difference when i put cards under the shot to make the correct hight for the crimp. If you add card on the top of the shot i think it will be pushed to on side or smashed to pieces so wouldn't make any difference either. panoma1
At one time all shotgun cartridges had a roll turnover closure so a top card (overshot) was neccesary! RTO shells still kill! I use them in the 8 Bore all the time! (No choice!!) If you are having to adjust the wad column stipulated for a proven/published formula?......you are possibly not using the correct components (or possibly the given formula is inaccurate?) If you do need to adjust the wad column height, better to add packer wads under the shot charge! Than over it......though some US formulas do specify wool felt packer wads both under and over the shot charge.
Richie10
Yeah, the recipe specified a wad over the top. I am now going to use Powershot and will be using cork wads to fill out the case instead of felt. I was using the Cheddite hulls but moved over to the used federals so hopefully will get a better crimp. Cheers
