hi all, i,ve just purchased a nikko 5000ii skeet barreled o/u. does anyone know if i can use steel carts in this gun,there is "nikko steel" stamped on the barrels but i,m not sure if this means i can use steel carts or if it,s a manufacturer grade of steel they use to make the barrels. the last owner had,nt a clue and neither have I, advice most welcome,thanks.

Nikko steel is the same as Winchester proof steel on the 101s , it means grade of steel for barrel manufacture..

.both made in Japan by Olin Kodensha in the same factory from many of the same parts

And no , they are not proofed for steel shot , but they are perfectly capable of doing so as long as you use 1/2 choke at the tightest

With skeet chokes you will be ok.

As TDS has stated above; perfectly fine.

It isn't the 'steel proof' of a barrel which prevents it being ruined by steel shot; it is the wad which contains the steel shot. If the steel shot leaves the wad even on a 'steel proofed' barrel, before the wad leaves the muzzle, then the barrel can/will be scored. Steel proof relates to pressure only.

I used Gamebore Super Steel 4's ( which are HP as far as I'm aware ) through an old 101 of mine for years with no ill effects, through chokes no tighter than half.
