fortune
Today the power supply to our house and the general surrounding area went down to a partial supply. Some things worked and other didn’t. Unfortunately one of our computers was working and there were a lot of weird noises coming from the hard drive. Before it was realised that there was a problem and an electrical supply problem the unit shut down. When I checked the house supply voltage it ranged from 109 to 130 volts. When the power supply had been restored the computer was fired up again but it will not boot up. There is an exterior solid state hard drive which I haven’t had the chance to check yet. Anyone got any ideas on what to check and reset and if I can claim for damage because of faulty supply. Now I know that the word will be, claim on your house insurance but why should I suffer the excess and claim hit for a problem not of my making. Any advice
buze
Your PC supply might have interpreted the lower voltage as on/off repeatedly, and the hard drives HATE that. It's likely to have just packed up really! If the PC still works, you have to check if your insurance policy premium is less than the price of a new drive. A new drive is likely to be cheaper! That is useless you had important data on that drive... Or perhaps you can claim for the whole PC, the rest of the components wouldn't have liked the treatment either... And technically as it is, it's 'no longer working'...
peck
Go into the BIOS and change the "boot from" device. Now your asking how to do that, check the internet.

fortune
OK , I'm in luck. With a bit of knowledge, a promt and a bit of flukey judgement I have managed to get the system to reboot and everything seems to be intact. all of the drives are up and running and no data appears to have been lost. now will it all fire up again next time on its own. there is just the freezer to check out now. Thanks for the promt peck. I found that it was set back to the default settings that was the key.
