To be effective with a vehicle ideally you really need 3 people. Driver, lamper and gunman. It can be done with less but it is not as good. You can do foot patrol on your own but there are safety issues involved from simply falling down to getting personally attacked by bullocks or the odd nutty anti. In the past I have had someone come out into the fields trying to find me by using a small torch. I knew the ground and just moved out of the area rather than confronting an unknown person and unknown agenda. I used my field skills to avoid them and carry on doing what I was doing. As far as they were concerned I had gone away. This has happened several times over the years.

Why do you need a vehicle of any sort for? For many years I have shot on foot. Backpack battery, lamp, homemade standing night bipod. You don't need to drive over every inch of the estate every night. Even if you did chances are that you can drive round half an hour later and you will say where was that one when we came round and. Been at all of these points before both on foot and with vehicle. As long as you show your face and knock a few over your doing your duty.

Hi Chris. That church is very decorated. the corpse thing is pretty vile and people were filing past it kissing it's feet. the dirty *******. yuuck. the box was like an embossed Backo foil coffin. In Argostoli we walked about halfway along the key and then up a side street towards probably the main shopping street there was a sports / fishing shop on the right in this side street. they had shotgun shell boxes in the window. I dont know what make they were. Sort of pastel pictures of partridges on the box. So someone must do some sort of shooting out there. there is probably a clay ground there somewhere but it is always very difficult to find information out about this sort of thing. I shot clays out in crete and the ground was really well set up and big but a shopkeeper along the road said that he didn't know anything about a shooting ground. Blind, deaf and didn't want to tell.

I don't know about differences between models but pigeons have a mind of their own and what might work one day might not on another. Some days a flapper will draw them in like a magnet and another they will flair off. Don't rely on any model.

I had a situation where I sprayed chain grease into my 500 to quieten down the action. It worked very well until one cold snowy day the dog bolted a rabbit out of cover and all I got was a click. I became a beater with a fence post Mossberg for the rest of the afternoon. On inspection the grease had hardened and slowed the hammer so that it didn't have enough impact to fire the primer. Yours could be a clogged action, a broken or worn part. They are pretty robust. Apart from that it hasn't ever had a problem. The main irritation that mine has is that it is a 3"and if I stuff more than five 2-3/4 in the tube, it will try to get 2 on the elevator at the same time which takes me a bit of a technique to deal with.

If you like the gun and you shoot well with it don't worry about it. Just carry on using it. So what if there are a few minor pits up the tubes. It isn't a safety issue. If you had a ported barrel they'd just drill a load of holes in the end. All of the old guns years ago had pitts up the tubes. I've got an old AyA #4 in the collection that has loads of big Pitts up the tubes. I take out a lot just because I shoot well with it. The gun doesn't have much financial value if I were to sell it so why get rid of it. Just keep cleaning so that they don't get bigger. Use Ed's Red and a phosphor bronze brush and hard work. They could even be plastic residue or stains of some sort. Just keep shooting.

My best wishes for him and his family. It is a hard fight to undertake. I have lost my mother and father and several other close relations to cancer. The wife has lost her father and several relations also. It all depends on how quick you find it and what treatment you get and the positive attitude of the person. When my mum was ill we went through bags of old family photos writing down who they were and when they were taken so that the information wasn't lost forever. This helped both mum and us in coming to terms with the end result. I wish that I had,had longer to talk to dad about his life and war exploits out in Burma but his condition Was bad and quick. Sometimes people don't think that it is appropriate at the time and stay away frightened that they will say the wrong thing. Suddenly it's all too late. At the least it gives you a bit of time unlike someone going out of the door in the morning and having a heart attack or being killed in a car crash or something. If it is only for a short time, can't you make do with the iron sights on the gun if it still has them fitted? The money saved could go on better optics when you do buy out in the states. 6x42 is a good choice but consider 8x also. 8x isn't too much mag or too heavy and if you want to put it onto a bigger Cal it suits longer distance.

I dont use paraffin, I use acetone and white spirit in mine. And a phosphor bronze brush rotated and then rod through with bog roll. the stuff comes out black. bores end up like mirrors then mop through with hydraulic oil. I've had some of my guns since the 70's. 303 does smell nice

I don't think that it is you that the pigeons are seeing. I've stood against a gatepost without any net at all before and they have come in. Try putting either some net or branches behind you.

In regards to the incident that I mentioned there isn't any sort of chemical industry or anything that I can think of that would account for the smell or the amount of time / quantity of material that would have caused it. Although we are some miles away from the coast, it is only residential and agricultural. At certain times of the year We sometimes get agricultural cow smells but this wasn't anything like that. It came and went but no one really noticed or commented on it. Now that the flag has been raised, if it happens again more notice and investigation might take place. If the lifeboat had motored out into the channel upwind or an aircraft sent out, it might have found the source of that mist cloud but I don't suppose that it was thought about at the time.

is this sort of thing happening with some regularity, but it isn't being reported? one afternon about a month ago there was a very odd chemical smell that drifted up from the coast direction on a fairly brisk breeze. This lasted for about half an hour or so. A bloke down the road who had been working out in his garden mentioned it to me so I wasn't imagining it. the smell didn't cause any problem health wise. to me it sort of smelt like a mixture of acetone. some sort of fuel and burnt plastic.I didn't really take a lot of notice of it at the time because it was just an odd smell but it didn't cause any health issue at all. since this episode the other day another person has comented on another occation recently where there was an odd smell on the wind. whatever it was must have been a fair disgharge of something to cover the area as it did. I did wonder if it was either some sort of old munition that had gotten corroded through or some sort of chemical weapon defence test to see how the stuff performs across open countryside. They did test like this with some sort of fungi spores to see how a device on the underground would spread through the tubes.

One of the son in laws who works in London was approached by a well dressed bloke who asked if son in law could give him a pound because he was 1£ short of his fare to his stop and he was worried about walking along the road at night from the station before. SIL thought that it was plausable and gave the bloke the £. A couple of weeks later the same bloke asked again. He was informed about a push bike. I suppose that if you were in a London station all day every day you could tap up hundreds in the course of a week and no tax to pay. No wonder that the bloke was well dressed.

i had the problem with a dog that wouldn't pick up birds. it was frightened of a pigeon. I cut the wings off and let the dog play with the wing. I put the wing in its mouth and held it shut for a while. I then threw the wing like a twig and the dog started to play with it. after a while I got the body out and the dog played with that and this sort of developed into a retrieve. we worked on that until it would retrieve anything. PS dont throw balls and let the dog run in to get it. this develops into the dog running in all of the time and once they think that it is ok to do this it is a real bad thing. every time you raise the gun, the dog is half way to the target.

It all depends on what you have on offer for the birds. I have seen it done using a simple string flapper on a field of flattened wheat. the line was probably 150 to 200 paces away in the next field and going straight across. the wheat field was on a slight slope towards the line. when a bird was about level with the pattern on it's line the flapper was given about three pulls. the birds immeadiatly turned and came around into the pattern. I think that the wind was left to right and the birds were traveling R<< L . this meant that when they came off line they were automatically coming into wind to the pattern.

I suppose it all depends on the size of shoot. Smaller shoots like to have beaters with dogs in the line as long as they can be kept in close to move the small quantity of birds available. a lot of bigger shoots dont want any dogs in the line at all because of the amount of birds in front of the line. dogs freak the birds into mass flush just by their presence and sometimes handlers cant control their dogs let alone be effective beaters. sometimes 1 in 3 beaters are pulled before the horn is blown to get away to start the next drive and the last beaters as soon as the horn is blown. pickers up do all of the picking and are left behind on their own to get on with it before moving into position behind the gun line even after the guns start shooting on the next drive.

Your going beating not on some sort of fashion parade. Just cut a stick out of the hedge. If you loose it, abandon it around the shoot somewhere or it gets broken you ain't lost anything. Just go and cut another out of a hedge somewhere. I find a bit of blue water pipe, a feed bag and cut the bag about in half to make a shortened sack. I then put the bit of blue pipe inside of the bag, making a sort of flag. The bag is stapled together around the pipe. This then becomes a multi tool. You can hold the rolled up end and bash trees with the pipe or it can be used as a flag. If it comes on to thrash it down it can be used to shield against the rain or stop that cold knife of wind on an exposed corner when you've had a long hot slogg up to seal an end. You can sit on the flag bit when it is wet or muddy. It can be flagged and it makes a crack sound when holding a long end stretch. A true multi beating stick tool that costs nothing and if it disappears during the day you ain't lost your buffalo horn. You aren't going to turn up in tweeds and a tie are you?

A few weeks ago I went through the underpass and there was a bloke and a woman (if it could be called that)(looked like one of these protest camp types) (you wouldn't even if you would desperate). Making a racket with a flute pipe thing.

I had an apprentice who didn't dry his hands properly and they used to get pretty bad. We had to show him how to dry his hands and take care of them as a working tool. When he dried them properly the problem stopped happening.
