:/ had my dell laptop about a year, never had a problem with it, last night it decides it will now determine when it wil be turned on and when it will be turned off. everything seems to be fine, then it just says 'hibernating' and it does one. or else everything goes black. then at other times it says preparing to standby, turns off then suddenly comes back on again. its never on for longer than a couple of minutes and it did it even whilst i've been trying to write this. any ideas what is going on and what i can do?

cheers,

BM.

Do you mean if you fiddle with the power cable it suspends/hibernates?

Some things to check :-

Start->Settings->Control Panel->Power Options

Under power schemes tab ensure the "Always On" scheme is selected. Then underneath check :-

Turn off monitor: Never

Turn off hard disks: Never

System Standby: Never

Click Advanced tab, under "Power Buttons" choose "Ask me what to do" for the question "When I press the power button on my computer:"

Click Hibernate tab, uncheck "Enable Hibernation"

Click Apply, Ok and reboot.

See if it still does it, if its a dody power cable and the computer thinks you are hitting the power button, this will help by asking you if you want to shut down every time it happens.

Let me know how you get on

done all of the above and it seems to have fixed it, tried fiddling with the cable, just a light up or down which before was turning it off and it seems to have stopped. but before it was doing also when i didnt touch a thing, everything would go black as if it was turning off then come back on with the same screen rather than going through the initial log in page. anyhow, like i say it doesnt seem to be doing it at the moment, so what does this all mean?

****** - just moved the monitor back and forth and it briefly went black then switched on again the next second.

That's a dodgy connection to your monitor :good:

Unplug and replug, securing the connections with the thumb screws provided.

If that doesn't work, look for bent pins in the connector.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your computer :good:

I am actually a computer expert, open the window to allow ventillation to the room, unplug your mains lead, mouse, tinternet connection and printer, pick machine up, shake it slightly to see if it rattles then chuck it out of the window, problem solved.

Next step go to PC World and buy a cheap lap top, they are so cheap now a days, not worth messing about with.

Only kidding guys ..................... I meant Dixons, I'll get me coat.
