Heavy 12g loads

Recommended Posts

Sometimes I don't use exact science to make a point, but that doesn't mean I'm stupid. Why talk to me like I am? :D

If you offer an opinion then say so ie. IMO

"My idea of a big shell is over 40g"........"so 56g (the approximate weight of a "big shell") " :stupid: That`s 40% more !!!!!!!

"extra pressure is usually created by trying to push a heavier load at nearly the same speed as a light one right??" :stupid::good::good: Light loads, in 12 bore, are 1200-1300f/s ish, where as magnums can be lower than 1000f/s.

20% increase in speed + 40% increase in load = DEAD, no if`s no but`s no maybe`s and if someone, possibly a ****** as you put it, follows your thinking then I hope you sleep well at night.

That's not what I said is it. If you read it again I said that magnum loads are slower, ie "extra pressure is usually created by trying to push a heavier load at NEARLY the same speed as a light one right??". NEARLY=LESS, NOT 20% MORE.

Everything gets blown well out of proportion these days. You can't make a relaxed statement without getting jumped on any more. I used to enjoy it here, but then everything went crazy and you have to make sure everything you say is exactly right so nobody can pick holes in it! Like I said, it was a figure of speach. I thought it was obvious to anyone with half a brain. Maybe I was wrong, but then that's nothing new is it :stupid:

imho the shotgun is one off the most versatile guns you could own (but not in the UK) You are all harping on about penetration of the projectile and about seeing "dead" bruised pheasants with no holes in them. You all seem to have missed the point that shock kills not penetration. I have shot loads of rabbits and pigeons in my time and the majority suffer very little damage (mainly surface) but they are dead all the same, now i also shoot with an air-rifle but even though it carries more energy at range it still wont kill if the shot placement is wrong. The yanks have done extensive research to see what actually kills and say that if you wanted to kill a large target you dont need oo gauge even though it carries loads of energy you are far better with number 4's as the shock damage is huge. You need to try and look at the whole picture instead of trying to attach the same theory's that apply to rifle's when hunting. I agree that there are limits to shot cartridges but you cant compare them to rifles as there two totally different fish.

If you could get ahold of a rifled slug for a shotgun and a scope some are claiming 4" groups at 100yards with them and they carry a huge amount of energy i would not like to be standing in front of one of them.

As for shooting foxes with a shotgun who hasnt just get a small load < no.4 with > 40gr of powder and keep the range sensible and mr foxy wont feel very well after it.
