oldypigeonpopper
hello, , for the last few years i have been changing over my 3x9x40 I/R Hawke L/R rimfire subsonic scope to a MK1 Photon about October time, this year i have a 4x12x50 of the same spec but i am thinking to try my new red pil TR 38 3 mode with a 2 X doubler giving 200 yards of good beam, the scope has a zero of 50 yards and i only shoot to max 80 yards, i have tried a red torch before without much success although a cheaper version than the TR, I just about see the cross hair, and rabbits always spooked, only shot 3 foxes this year at lambing and all within 50 yards and clean kills saw a few more but spooked, (note i have to put photon on rat 22 air rifle) any advice PW members how i can use a red torch at night with more success, cheers (note last year i was getting a lot of eye strain with the Photon hence red torch) Edited September 9, 2017 by oldypigeonpopper
Benthejockey
If they're not lamp shy and they don't scent you you'll be fine. I shoot a large proportion of foxes and rabbits on a white lamp. Especially now we're going into autumn and there's still a lot of Cubs about they're stupid and don't care about the lamp. It's only the older foxes or later in the year when they've been educated that lamping gets difficult. I've got NV and it's great and if I could be ***** to swap it on the the 243 I'd probably use it on that as well as the HMR but I'm too tight to buy new mounts. It's easy to get hung up on the latest best new thing. I'd love thermal because having looked through one they look brilliant. But I doubt it would actually increase my strike rate significantly from the old lamp. The same applies to the rabbits don't miss and the lamp won't bother them 👍🏼

Benthejockey
I've got the same mounts as you on my HMR. I'm using a Yukon Photon. But to put it on my 243 I need to buy some reach forward mounts because it's an awkward action length. I bought an add on off someone on here recently but it won't fit unless I buy some higher mounts and I'm just too lazy to re zero 😂
