Hillclimbing

I had an afternoon out a Hillclimb yesterday, and brought back the memories flooding back - luckily, not enough for me to rush out and buy another track car.

It was a pretty low key event, but we will look for a bigger one some time over the summer.

As always there was great variety of cars, from a fairly knackered MR2 to a couple of ex F1 engined single seaters.

Here are some of the pictures, starting with a mint Mk1 Escort in the carpark

One for the Essex boys, what's not to like?

Mighty Moggy Minor

'The pits' actually a farmyard fro the rest of the time...

Slightly more serious car, a Dalara ex curcuit racer

The remains of a Hillman Imp, these things fly.

They are just spaceframes covered in fibreglass bodies, and for those who don't know (or are too young to remember) the Imp engine screems when fully sorted, very quick motors.

A Viper and Cobra coupe

Some more Escorts

And a couple of nice engines

I have a few 'action' shots but with a fairly ordinary digital camera it is hard to get anything too good.

You have to give it 3 yards lead and hope for the best!

I know what you mean Stuart, used to watch the VW's offroad hillclimb - they were excellent, rear engined, rear wheel drive...great fun!

Out of the ones shown I would go for the Moggy! Were there any Beetle's present? (bit of an air-cooled-head myself!)

Loving the Escorts, had a couple for my first cars, they were beat up and a bit rusty but I loved them and used to spend Sat mornings down the local car yard gettting bits for them and seeing what extras I could add on. So easy to work on and meant that I was able to learn the basics of car repairs with my dad, happy days.

Oh and the 6R4 is sweet, I heard they go like .... off a shovel.

The 6R4 (i think) is the clubmans version, as it didn't have the V6 mid engine that the Group B version had.

I have some verry poor video that I took with my still camera I will upload that later, the picture isn't any good but you get the idea of the sound.

It is worth pointing out some of the cars there were touching 110mph up/down a track no wider than 10 or 12 feet, it takes a while before you can do that with any confidence!

Here are the links to some very short video clips, the sound is OK but the pictures, I am afraid, are not.

I am still waiting for someone to buy me a better camera

I thought the Moggy wasa V8 at first but it isn't, I never saw under the bonnet, but from the vid you can hear it spins the tyres after it has started rolling (and it was quite sticky there) so it has gone some poke.

Here is Nick Mann's V8 nitrous minor

It was said to have had (back then) 500bhp

He moved the engine/gearbox back so far he pretty well sat in the back, BUT he used to drive it on the road!
