New to Loading advice please.

Recommended Posts

I want to get into reloading more as a hobby than a cost saving exercise, nothing fancy I'm just going to get a Lee Loadall 2 and it's something to do on the dark wet winter evenings when I have an hour spare.

I have local RFD's that sell a variety of wads, primers, powders and shot etc. so I can keep the costs reasonable. I'm going to be reloading 12 Ga so I know it's not the most cost effective however this is mainly as a hobby.

Could anybody point me in the direction of good quality load data? I'm happy to buy data sheets online etc.

I'm mainly after something along the lines of a good quality 30-32g No. 6 lead shot for the pigeons, if possible reloading my spent Hull Superfast Shells?

I have thousands of Hull Superfasts that i'll be using at the clay grounds so ideally will just reload these to create a pigeon load in readiness for perms. I'll be using the same gun for clays/pigeons so spent cartridges being reloaded will be going back through the same barrels and only reloaded once as I'll have a constant supply from clay shooting as I'll just continue to buy all clay loads direct from the RFD.

I'm new to this so any advice / comments are welcomed along with any good literature I can read up on etc.

Haven't a clue about the reloading tools/process. This is just a thought and it must be said that it's patently obvious that there's nothing wrong with 6s. By and large, it's pattern that kills pigeon. Particularly if you're loading fibre and as you have control over velocity, it might be worth looking at smaller shot sizes. Am thinking in the main 6&1/2, but 7s wouldn't be amiss. You could keep your strike rate up with a smaller load and save a few £s into the bargain. Having said that, I won't be too surprised if you add that they'll also be for pheasant, etc.

Not for pheasant at least this year for me, just pigeons most likely so a good call!

Thanks!
