Sussex Countryman
Followed all the advice to strip off varnish on stock and fore-end, Nitromors worked a treat. I'm now left with what remains of the original stain to get off. I've applied several coats of Nitromors and tried rubbing with the grain with fine wire wool, but it doesn't seem to have much effect on the stain. Is it a case of more & more Nitromors, or is there another process? The raw white wood is grinning through in places so can see what it should look like, but before I make mistakes can anyone tell me how to get rid of the stain please. Thanks Sx Ctymn
Peter_HMR
I would have though once you have got the varnish off some fine sand paper to smooth it out reove any dents and take off previous stain/finish....... NO??
MC
If it is a true stain then you won't get rid of it, unless you remove an awful lot of wood. The stain would normally be applied to the wood to give the required colour and then varnished over the top. This means that the stain soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top of it.
