Ferretboy111
My ESS is a bitch and 15 weeks. Firstly, She has humped my foot, now im sure ive seen cows do this to one another? any ideas, as she is a girl i wouldnt really expect her to hump my leg. It is very rarely she does it but still. Secondly, She likes to carry her lead about, should i tell her off for doing so? or just let her do it? She just tangles herself up in the end. Apart from that she is pretty steady. Cheers guys, Alex

Cranfield
The leg humping is a "dominance" thing and quite common in young dogs, even bitches. Just discourage her by pushing her off immediately and eventually it stops. Carrying the lead is no problem, but as LB said, make sure she has plenty of toys to carry. Pups often break their baby teeth chewing stones (they use stones like a baby's teething ring), nothing to worry about.
Ferretboy111
Been to the vets, the said just leave it and it wil drop out- thank fully it didnt cost anything!! She loves to retrieve, only fun exciting things though- tennis balls etc bore her now, she likes sticks and picking up anything dead she can find, like dead baby birds etc, has a decent nose on her. Still need to educate the parents and brother though with her, they think if Truffle is in the fridge when they open it, that saying OUT at her a 1000 times will make her move out. Slipster
Alex, On a serious note my ESS is a year old and loves to fetch dead birds, unfortunately the other day sat outside the back door with one of the baby chicks in her mouth wagging her tale like crazy. Wife not to happy One of the worst habbits she has is to take birds in flight and she is not bothered what, any garden birds are always on her list. Maybe NTTF you could offer some advise on how to stop her leaping into trees bushes ect after garden birds? MAny thanx in anticipation Slipster
Suffolk shooter
Chill FB, she is only 15 weeks old and you should be having fun with her and not getting to heavly into the real training just yet. Start at the basics and stick to them until she does it everytime. i.e. Sits on command everytime, comes to her name everytime, walks to heel on the lead. You rush her now and I'll guarentee you that will be it. I have seen three other dogs ruined by their owners rushing the pups thinking they could get them to do things quicker and then moving on to the next thing without actually bothering to reinforce the basics. Have you actually found someone locally where YOU and her can get training. I can give you the number of someone over at Mendlesham Green, who is very good and its nice and local to you. Give me a ring. SS
Ferretboy111
SS, how on earth you managed to get that im rushing training with my puppy from this post i havent a clue. Im not rushing anything, and training, if you can call it that is going swimmingly at the present moment. Ive taken note of your advice, but when i get to the point of needing help training her then ill turn to an expert. I believe that the vast array of books and advice given to me from various trainers on the internet aswell as friends, aka Martin to name but of one has helped endlessly. At the end of the day the good thing is that i have got time for her, and she loves being out with me on my shoot prancing about in her normal fashion. See you soon for a lamping session. MC
Alex, On the 15th july in the afternoon, it is the last Essex Spaniel Get together meet so it might be worth you coming over and seeing how they teach and I will introduce you to Julie who was my instructor last year. She is very good and if you come with truffle next season you will be in her class. There is also the people that I did Merlins obediance training with and they run classes in Ardliegh (not that far from you) and they were excellent. Just keep it fun and let it happen and you will be fine.
