Well here is another as you call us Yank, although those of us from the south prefer to be called Rebels , since our war of northern aggression about 150 years ago.

I live in east Texas, the green part, and have pretty well given up on hunting. It's too expensive here. My interests run more to shooting, rifles, shotguns and handguns, in that order. The last few years I developed in interest in some of the military surplus rifles especially the Swedish 96 Mauser, and the Swiss straight pull, although I have one model of1871 Swiss Vetterli. In shotguns I prefer the traditional double barrel, my oldest being a vintage Parker, but my fun guns are a 28ga Darne and a 16 ga Charlin, both French sliding breech doubles. As far as handguns anything I can hold on to.

I stumbled across a link to this forum on a link I found in the Uplandjournal.com forum.

Back in the early winter of '91 I spent a few months over there as guest of your govt and our USAF, as a pharmacy officer manning a contigency hospital for our combined services. The hospital was set up as a field hospital at RAF Little Rissington,

in the Cotswold area, not too far from RAF Brize Norton and RAF Fairford.. We were billited in the town of Carterton and bussed to Little Rissington daily, very early in the morning. I was amazed at the abundance of small game there, especially rabbits (hares) and pheasant. Several of us would have loved a chance to hunt some but there were to many problems to overcome and the weather that Jan and Feb was extremely cold there.

I did enjoy my short stay in England and seeing a small part of your beautiful country, one of the most memorable days seeing Oxford covered in snow.

I probably shall not post much, but will definitely enjoy reading.

Welcome to the forums jeff, sorry to hear you are getting priced out of hunting. Are you living in quite a densely populated area- surely there must be some land you can get access on?

There is quite a bit of open land around here, but good hunting leases cost in the thousands an an annual basis. There is a national forest area, but it can be quite dangerous as the big thing around here is hunting for whitetail deer. About 45 years ago my dad took me to a similar place, and with a deer hunter behind every tree we decided not to play that game.

I could afford it but the way I work would not have that much time, so would rather spend my money on collecting nice guns.

Since getting my son finished up with college and law school about four years ago, I find I can now indulge in this passion a bit more.
