I don't have a boat :D But I must admit I wouldn't mind meeting up for a session and you helping me with the casting. MC will tell you alot of effort but not distance. On good nights I cast 100-125 yds, but as most of the places I fish you need to get to around 150yds, I am falling short. I just don't quite seem to have the technique down at all. Still catch fish, but not of the size I want (Thats if there about these days) Best fish I have had are 10lb Skate (Offshore) 6lb 4oz Bass (onshore), 4lb 6oz Cod (onshore) 5lb smoothie (Offshore) 10lb strap conger (on shore). Although biggest fish I have ever had was 32lb Mirror Carp one of five thirties I had on a syndicate water near Bury St Edmunds over two days, what a weekend.

Apart from the trip to Dorset, I haven't been since I went with MC out of Mersea betwen Xmas and New Year last year :o

I really want to start getting out again, but the syndicate has kept me busy and now we are only 27 days away from the start of the wildfowling season, god when will I ever get a chance ???

If you fancy meeting up for a session I'll PM you my mobile so we can arrange it.

  • 2 weeks later...

If one was to convince my little brother that a day trip to Dorset and my Mum that driving us there is a good idea... where would you Dorset lads reccomend I go to do a spot of spinning/lobbing feathers as far as I can and reeling them back in?

Chesil beach seems to be the place to be. Is it dependant on the tides and time if you are fishing off the beach? Any particular spots recomended on the beach where the mackerel often put in a good showing? What sort of gear are you guys using for them as well? Also be brutally honest... is a schoolboy armed with a reasonably stout rod, a mitchell reel with 20lb line and a few traces and spinners that caught off the rocks fishing in a bay going to have any chance at success off the beaches in your area?

Thanks,

FM

Chesil beach would be my choice and I would fish at least 1 hour of the tide up, the top of the tide and 1 hour of the ebb.

The ability to cast 100 yards plus is usually not required when the mackerel are in, as they come in much closer to the shore.

However, the conditions have to be right, you don't want strong winds and a rough sea, the calmer the better.

Get yourself some mackerel feathers, as a single spinner is not very effective, unless they are really shoaling thick and close.

I had had two sessions at Hythe last week in ideal conditions and never caught a mackerel.

There were only 2 caught , with about 50 people fishing for them.

At Dungeness last Tuesday, they were right on the shoreline apparently, forcing whitebait up on the beaches.

I spoke to a chap who had 110 in just over an hour.

He said that the beach was full of Chinese people with big rubber dustbins and some were even lobbing handlines out with feathers on.

It sounded as though wearing a crash helmet would be a good idea there.

I will try again at Hythe later this week, if the sun comes out and the winds ease.
