fishhead
Hello, I have been thinking about getting some ferrets for some time now and read several books on the subject of keeping and working them. I live in Stevenage Hertfordshire and my questions are– 1 - Does anyone know of any land around Stevenage, which is crying out for someone to work their ferrets on? 2 – Is it normally difficult to get permission from farmers to work your ferrets on their land? Thank you in advance for your posts.
Cranfield
I can,t help you with land around Stevenage. Farmers are more relaxed about giving permission for ferreting, if its netting only, no guns. On the basis that its very difficult to catch pheasants, with a ferret. Thats always been my experience. The gun can come later, when the trust has been developed. Its also worth dressing reasonably smartly, when you call to see them. Farmers are wary of the Urban Terrorist look. fishhead
Thanks for your speedy reply. Are you suggesting that ferreting on some ones land could be a stepping-stone to shooting on their land?
Cranfield
It always has been for me. Over the years, I have got most of my vermin shooting, by ferreting first. When I had an FAC, it was because a Farmer I ferreted for, suggested I get a silenced rifle for night shooting the rabbits, that came down from a railway embankment on to his land. Then one Farmer introduces you to another Farmer etc. etc.
avvitnow
when it comes to getting land you tend to reap as you sew.Get involved with your local shoot(beating etc).work hard be willing ask the keeper if you can help him out and before you know it the ferretting will be yours. Then get a reference off the farmer and/or keeper and try too increase your ground.Remember to always backfill nicely, offer a rabbit or two too the farmer and don,t forget the obligatory bottle of whisky at christmas with a thanks for my ferretting permission from yourself.Oh yeah and always ask if you can take a mate or a dog on the land don,t just turn up mob handed, and always let keeper/farmer know when and where your going.stick to these pointers and you,ll soon have places to go.avvit. Columbus Polumbus
Shouldn't this be moved to the land part of the forum?? OK then just for you CP, will cost you a pint in PW Arms later though. Ern.
fishhead
Sorry, I didn’t even look to see that there were other forum sections ( A bit obvious now though ).
Andy17
Sent you a pm but might aswell say now, just walk round to the local farms and ask,as said before alot of it is large crop fields better for shooting, have a look out towards hitchin, bigglewade etc. Farmers prefere ferreters I think, it's alot safer than firing shots off all over the place.
