fiiish1987
I've spotted this on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_on_Con...orces_in_Europe basically, the Ruski's want to withdraw from the treaty as the USA want to deploy a missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic. This along with Alexander Litvinenko, could be interesting times ahead....

vole
The Russkies are throwing their weight around as they used to it seems.Bit wierd how we recently were sending aid and helping them dismantle their decrepit nuclear missiles.Anybody over 40 might be reminded of the threat we lived under then with a prospect of getting splatted by nukes.Stuff them and their posturing.Sad thing is our armed forces, however great they are ,dont seem to be a fraction of their strength in the 70,s or 80,s.The russians get right on my wick. JohnGalway
He's trying to recreate their sphere of influence by bullying his neighbours. Most of whom wouldn't go back even in a fit of maddness. Wouldn't worry about nukes/army etc. It'll be his preferred weapon of mass disruption he'll use, energy. Cranfield
I have a degree of sympathy for Putin on some things. There is a lot of natural resources in Russia which are being exploited by Western companies (taking the profits outside the country) and the Oligarchs who got their hands on these assets during the Yeltzin era, by patronage and possibly criminal means ( a couple are already in prison and some have left the country to avoid arrest) . Like Abramovich they are investing it all outside Russia, Putin is just trying to get the wealth back where it belongs. The USA decide to ring Russia's western borders with missiles, "to protect Europe from terrorists". You can understand Putin being a bit concerned that these are pointing at Russia, where nobody normally expects terrorists to come from. Then we have the dodgy bloke who leaves Russia and is hiding in the UK, he gets killed, possibly by another Russian who is supposedly ex KGB. I bet our Secret service have never done something like this . There is also a suggestion that it has something to do with drug smuggling. SNAKEBITE
With the amount of Russian "mafia" shenanigans going on I think Putin is having a blow off to show he is a man of strength. A warning to the dissidents within the state and a confidence boost to others within the country. Posturing is one thing, backing it up is where it can get worrying.
