malkiserow
Hello, At the risk of asking a question put up too many times, I’ll set the scene first. My shooting. I’ve shot for 30 years mostly rough-shooting. Currently I shoot over pasture and potatoes. I have no cereals to shoot on but there is plenty next-door! (I cannot shoot on the neighbouring land at all). High bags are interesting and sometimes I guess they may be fun for me too but mostly I shoot small quantities just for the pot/freezer or friends/family. For the pigeons I wish to get into double figures for my bag but bag sizes measured in hundreds I’ll leave for the experts. I have 21 old decoys, a mixture of shells, 4 flocked full-body birds, the rest a mixture of feeding and sitting full body non—flocked and 2 plastic non-flocked flying decoys (detachable wings). I have a 4meters x 1meter of old camo-netting …. A bit too see-through but better than nothing … anyway there are plenty of hedges and I can do a bit of bushcraft to help hide myself. My question…… What is the best kit to get if any? Do I really need a rotary and if so what birds plastic/socks/real to put on the ends of the arms? Thanks in anticipation…. codling99
i allways keep a few dead pigeons in freezer in shed.and stick them on flapper or rotary or both .dont really need them, but i found they help on them quiet days where nothing seems to spot your pattern. also a bouncer works well i find. pin
No toys will bring birds into an area they don't want to be in, but a few question first :- Are you seeing a decent number of birds? When you see them do they come your way but jink off, spooked at all? Are there any flight lines you observe to neighbouring fields? Are you able to get the deeks up off the floor so they can be seen, and can you get movement into them? If you see numbers of birds in the area it can be tricky to get them to come close to something they don't want to be on, but it can be done. In this case I think movement, notably movement of white neck and wing bars will help no end. If you can afford a rotary give one a shot, perhaps try and borrow one first to see if they pay any attention. If not you can make up bouncer/floaters for a few quid and they do wonders in giving a little more realism and confidence to come into the pattern. Ultimately it's 90% observation and then getting in the place the birds want to be, staying hidden and that's how you make bigger bags. HI, I'll try to get the hang of "quotes" with my text added !!!!! there are plenty of woodies in the area but seem small numbers going all different directions... spooked if I move (standing in field with no hide) sometimes there is an obvious flightline and I get some success just standing under a tree in Camo. I'll try to get the deeks up a bit on wobble sticks More often than not they will sit in the trees boardering my shooting fields and the nextdoor corn .... thanks
