casts_by_fly
Hi guys, I'm going to get a 223 in the near future for medium range 'pest' control. Being a displaced yankee, I'll be most likely taking the gun back to the states with me in a few years. For a moderated gun, that means some extra paperwork. So I have three options. (1) I can go with an unmoderated gun entirely. (2) I can get a moderated gun and sell it before I go. (3) I can get a moderated gun and take it back. I'm not one for selling guns once I own them, so option 2 is all but out of the picture for me. I want the gun to shoot sub 0.5 MOA. Can a moderated gun do that? If so, which ones? If I go with an unmoderated gun it will be either the savage varminter or a TC contender. Both are sub MOA guns with good consistent loads. Is it better to buy a moderated gun in the first place or should I have a gun cut and fitted afterwards? Thanks, Rick
Devilishdave
On the whole the moderator tends to improve accuracy this is because as I am sure you know a side effect of a moderator is reduced recoil und thus reduced flinch. This is particularly apparant with people who are not that used to full bore rifles. At the weekend I managed one group that was 1/4 MOA at 100m With a remington 700 fitted with a T8 Dave

casts_by_fly
Hi guys, So it looks like a moderated rifle can do what I want accuracy wise. Good to know. I want a moderated gun because I get tinnitis in my ears pretty bad sometimes. I normally don't shoot anything without ear plugs right now, but some hunting you just can't sit with ear plugs in and there is no time to put them in. I'm used to big bores. I used to shoot a 30-06 all the time with no problems. I do agree though that when you know there is no recoil to think about and can watch your bullet hit the target you tend to shoot better. My 17 HMR is good for that. I'll look around and consider my options for guns. At least I'm pretty well settled on the caliber now.
