Which First Air Rifle?

Hello there. My son and I have recently started shooting, we both have 12 bore shotguns and have had a few lessons and are both left-handed shots.

We are lucky, because we have access to good shooting land at my sister and brother-in-law's farm in Dorset.

We would now like to buy an air rifle and are looking to spend up to £300 pounds on a 'springer'.

What would you recommend and can you get left-handed versions?

Thanks

i personally would go for a light weight wehirauch as many of them dont have biased cheekpieces, im lefthanded and can comfortably shoot my right handed hw80 with no bother as the cheekpiece doesent intrude over the left hand side, many other springers have rollover cheekpieces and would be difficult to shoot for the opposite handed. and i along with many on this forum would say that h.w are one if not THE best spring air rifle if not a little too heavy

plus if ever you go to sell with a right hander you have more of a market to go at rather than struggle with a dedicated left handed rifle, thats my opinion anyways.

maybe a bit too heavy for his lad to be honest, best thing to do would be to try some out at the local gunshop, as they are very heavy guns the h.w's the hw95 hw85 are among the lightest of the range and are full power

Thanks Paul - I was hoping to get a full kit for about £300, including scope and bag. Are those lightweight Wehirauch models that you mentioned going to be within my budget new?

My son is 15, 6ft and about 13st, so he's not going to worry too much about the weight.

i wouldn't worry about giving him a heavy gun as long as he is strong and fit,

just take him along to a ghun shop and try a range of them.

Thanks for your advice guys. Think I'll try out the hw's that you mentioned and a BSA Lightning XL, which seems to get a good press.

Good forum this; loads of advice on just about anything to do with the sport.

Weihrauch and air arms are known to produce some of the best springers money can buy.

Weihrauch are work horses, although alot of people say that they shoot alot better once they have had a good lubing up, one thing I don't like about them is that they just look really plain, and a bit boring for my tastes.

Air arms are known to shoot fantastically straight out of the box, they are known to be heavier that Weihrauches though, the walnut stocks are fantastic in terms out quality of wood, and also how they function.

Most people either go for the Weirhrauch 97's or 90's, with Air arms the TX series are the most popular, the is also the pro sport which is known as the best looking springer around with it's hidden underleaver.

I'd say that you're best bet it to go to a few shops and have a look at them.
