Ferret Master
I'm afraid I don't have any plans but one good bit of advice. Make it look as natural as possible, it's rare for a fully metal trap to catch an adult, wary, wild fox. The trap we used to use was made with as much wood as possible and weathered outside before use so it looks less suspicious. FM
beatingisbest
In what situation do you need to catch the fox? Around pheasant pens? etc
tulkyuk
it is for a friend - think its for around the pen?
beatingisbest
it is for a friend - think its for around the pen? I would use a snare then, much more effective i find, but need to be checked reguarly and you will need a shotgun aswell when you check them. Teal
The only fox traps I've heard of working- except for cubs and in built up areas- are supposed to be really big. I wasn't really listening the dimensions and can try and find out for you, but much larger than the commercial fox traps you see. I don't think many people bother with them, they are a waste of space, and the prices people try to charge are ridiculous anyway (probably because they know once you've bought one you won't buy any more as they're rubbish!). tulkyuk
he want to catch it live - so snares would be no good ( i had already suggested that and i said i'd shoot it for him)
auto culto
if your trying to catch an urban fox than a cage should work but if its a truly wild fox you have little hope unless you make a very big cage (almost garden shed size so they feel safe) as they are very wary. I would definitely go with the snares if possible but check them morning noon and night as IMO i dont like the thought of any animal trapped and in pain. If you use a snare you will have to secure it to a loose post or somthing heavy that can be dragged by the fox otherwise if you just snare its leg it will chew its own leg of to escape if it cant move anywhere. Is shooting it or snaring an a viable option ? Ive only every managed to trap 1 fox in a cage but i,ve had countless cats and hedgehogs in the same cage. If you want i will forward you some close up pics as its one i made If you do decide on the cage trap you must install it and bait everyday for at least a week but dont set the trap just jam it open untill your happy that the bait is being taken by charlie as for a while it will be very carfull and not enter fully so you wont be guarenteed a catch. If it sets it off and escapes you will never get another chance.
