Englefield Green, Surrey - any locals?

Hello,

 

Just wondering if anyone is local to Englefield Green or its local area (Egham, Virginia Water, etc). I'm looking around the area for local farms to gain permission to shoot rabbits or pigeons with a .22. So far not too much success - so wondering if there is anyone else to team up with, or offer experience with the area.

You live in the valley of golf courses, give them a try, try and have a word with the head greenkeeper in person.

Normally they say 'we have someone already' but sooner or later that someone let's them down and that is your in.

I doubt Wentworth needs anybody but Sunningdale and the like may do.

And all that Crown Estate land round there, Smiths Lawn and the like. .

 

 

Did you know that lady Di used to get her driver to stop at the newsagents in Englefield Green to by her Lion bars on the way back to Windsor?

I know that doesn't help you in the slightest, but that, and fact my brother used to live there are the only things I could remember about E.G.

Englefield Green's not in a valley, it's on a hill overlooking Runnymede on the Thames. I was born there believe it or not, but moved away in '62 when I was 6 years old, I don't think there's much open farmland in the area that would be available to newcomers.

 

Far better to blast down the M3 and start door knocking on farms in Hampshire..??

stuartp - Nice Di trivia! Despite the fact that it's quite a dull little suburb Englefield Green does have a few interesting bits of history attatched to it. As well as the Magna Carta site just down the hill, the last fatal duel in England was fought there, and the dying Frenchman afterwards taken back to the Barley Mow Inn. Ever have a drink there?

 

Golf Courses - good idea! I'll look them up and pay a visit. There's a lovely field just next to (what was) Brunel University that was an old student golf course, but it's ownership is in limbo. The ground has just been sold to Oracle Property Developers, I might try a letter there (long shot, but maybe until they start construction).

 

I've tried the famer of Beaumonts going down St. Jude's Road towards the Thames, but they've already 'got someone'. The Crown Estates could be a good call, although I'm sure they've got all that 'By Royal Appointment' panapoly...

There is countryside if head out towards Fifield and Winkfield Row that sort of way, not to far for you to travel.

I went to school with one of the gamekeepers on the Queens estate, so stay away from there, I am still working on that one

 

Years ago I went out with a girl who worked at the polo stables near Smiths Lawn so we used to drink in the Fox and Hounds and The Bells of Ouzeley (before it was a Harvester obviously ) down the bottom of the hill.

You can impress/bore your friends even more if you tell that a ferry used to cross the Thames to connect the Ouseley Road in Wraysbury to the Ouseley Road in Old Windsor.

 

And as Cat responded to your post you can also tell them that you have now spoken to someone who would have been arround at the time of the signing of the Magna Carta
