i really enjoy paintballing, and been a few times, thinking about buying my own marker and gear. anyone got any views on relatively cheep markers, looking at the tippmann 98 at the mo, but been offered a near NEW PCT marker, with mask tank hopper etc for 100 big ones. just asking first so i dont make a bad mistake.

It depends how far you want to go with paintballing.

I played for a long while and did quite a few comps (European, World champs to name two) and the guns that you will need for this tend to get a bit pricey. If you are just goign to be playing once every couple of months as a rec player, then the Tipp98 is a good solid gun to go with. It's rock solid and is easy to take apart when it goes wrong.

My personal choice would be to go for an Autococker (had a _seriously_ modified one when I was playing comps) as a base one is relatively cheap, it runs on air or CO2 and it can be modded up to the nuts if you need to. Also, there should be a fair few knocking around second hand. If the site is still up, have a look at www.p8ntballer.com. They used to have a review section...

One word... Always get a double-glazed mask like a decent JT. They might be expensive, but they don't fog up and that's worth it. A motorised hopper is also a handy thing to have, but not essential with something like a Tipp 98.

Ex-paintabller here

I custom built a paintball gun, most paintballers will tell you there no such thing as a 'sniper' in paintball, but i quickly became Team ACM sniper, I would run flag missions with a 3 man team, in full camo (my own not the site stuff) behind the opposing teams base, and in from the back. Many a man did I fell, by shooting from the rear.... what a suprised look I got through a custom built mounted red dot sight, the only paintball gun on the field with a scope.

Custom barrle kit, I would change barrels during the day depending on the temprature. I used a .685-.685-.687 barrel set, up to 18'' long. The change in bore size was due to the temprature. On a hot day or cold day, the paint actually expands and contracts*, so I used the right bore for maximum accuracy. The barrels where all ported at the end, and made from aircraft alloy.

I was a pretty keen shot back then, and spent a fair few days wages on the kit. But it was well worth it!! and I miss it :) maybe one day il go back to it.

*Paintballs are made from non-toxic matiriel, inside a Gelatine shell to hold the paint.

My favourite were the PMI paintballs with an extra hard skin, to prevent any breaks in the barrel. A broken paintball will actually foul the barrel so much as to loose accuracy, or cause another breakage. Paintballs will often break when you run a high pressure, and tight bore, combined with soft skinned ball.

In some cases cheap semi's will break the ball, because the reciprocating bolt will mash the ball before it seats in the bore. (gravity fed hopper).

If you need a scope rail fitted to your gun do give us a PM!

The Tippman guns are good, but they do lack power. Make sure you find an upgraded spring, or like me, go to a locksmith and get a custom spring

Too much power = ball breakage and lots of fliers

Too little power = balls may not have enough power to break on impact, larger tradjectory, lower range.

Get a gun with adjustable power, ut make sure you dont spend to much, untill you get into pro games. Then get a propper Autococker B)
