Badger - Up Close

Today I could not fail to notice the amount of badger poo around the field beside the house so I went for a little walk and have just got back.

Rigged up my gun lamp and this was the ideal excuse to try out the Infra Red filter for it combined with the Night Vision Monocular I picked up a while ago.

It has it's own built in IR illuminator but that is pretty feeble past 30 yards.

So I set off scanning ahead from time to time and see a few rabbits but nothing else. Then as I come up the side of a wooded valley I see a pair of eyes moving my way about 120 yards away.

I wait for a couple of minutes and scan again and there is a badger rootling around at the base of the hedge, he cuts though and I can hear him in the leaves.

I stay put and he pops out about 40 yards from me, hardly daring to move or breath I carry on watching him as he slowly works his way to me, the wind is perfect blowing from him towards me and he has no idea I am there.

He is digging for worms, eating blackberries from the hedge, crunching on fallen hazel nuts, fantastic to watch.

As he moves closer I stay with him and he finally twigs something is not right when he is about 10 feet away, he stops and starts to sniff like mad, no wonder they are called hogs as he sounded just like a pig. He takes a few more steps towards me and then freezes, head up looking straight at me taking great big snuffles.

He is within a few feet of me and even without the NV I can clearly see the white stripes on his face.

Finally he decides it is time to get away and turns and shuffles away, in no great hurry so he was not spooked.

Very pleased with the new filter on my lamp, should proove useful on spooky foxes!

same thing happened to me but with a woody. It was just getting dark and I was taking my black lab for a walk. I noticed it about 20 feet ahead of me that their I was walking closer to it with my dog by my side it noticed me when I was about 10 feet away but I think it noticed me before i noticed it. Until I was about 5 feet away it suddenly flew away. Now I dont know weather it was ill or wat but I was told they flew away at the first site of humans.

I had a similar experience with a badger while out with nv. It was switched off as i was walking along, but something was approaching with a purpose, so i switched on my spotting monocular, and put the iluminator on. The badger stopped in its tracks about 15ft away and ran off to about 100yds away and watched. It was a bit disconcerting.
