Has anyone heard of the gun maker W R Leeson from Ashford in Kent

I bought a DB sbs  hammerless Boxlock 12 bore at an auction in suffolk about 8 years ago and it has the name W R Leeson (Ashford Kent) on the barrels. it has been sleeved and the original proof marks date it around 1890 to 1920. It is a plain gun with not much engraving.but apart from that is in lovely condition. Great little gun for carrying around the fields and shoots well.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

A quick search reveals that W R Leeson had a gunshop at 29, Maddox, Ashford and in Regent Street, London.

I am not sure if they still exist, but a check with BT Direcory Enquiries for Ashford would be a good start.

Guns are like everything else, they are worth what someone is prepared to pay for them.

I have a sidelock sbs made by Sanders of Maidstone, they are no longer trading.

It seems that once upon a time, every large town had a gunsmith, that actually made guns and didn,t just import foreign ones.

Sidelock and boxlock are names for the two most popular types of shotgun mechanisms. Sidelocks are usually more expensive and viewed as superior in quality. To the layman, they can be distinguished between by their appearance. On a boxlock where the action is attached to the stock there will be a straight joint, and on a sidelock, the joint will be very curved, the action is actually "sunk" into the wood. Having said that, some boxlocks have sideplates fitted, which can give the appearance of being a sidelock. There are also significant differences to the internal mechanisms.
