cartridge
Do you need a licence to shoot birds like wood pigeon, and if so how much do they cost?.
russuk
No. They're covered on the General License... http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-countrysi...gen-licence.htm Also, you no longer need a game license to take game... http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...showtopic=37702

Tarka
general license means there is no need for any sort of licence to kill those animals...obviously shotgun and firearms certification is needed if you want to use those guns

CharlieT
Yes a license is required to shoot wood pigeon and various other species of birds. All birds in this country are protected, however every year DEFRA issue what is called an open general license. Under the terms of this license it permits the shooting some so called pest species of which the woody is one. You may view the general license on the DEFRA web site. It is important to read and understand the terms (ie.rules) of the general license, as to break them will land you in court. Charlie

russuk
But as he's in niether, he doesn't. Cartridge my English was a bit lacking in my first post. No you don't need to go and purchase or have a license as such. Yes you do need to be aware of the general license that covers woodpigeon. So just be aware of the general license and it's wording, you can look at a copy here... http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/regulat/...s_man/wlf18.pdf "Permits authorised persons to kill or take certain birds, or to take, damage or destroy their nests; or to take or destroy their eggs, for the purposes of: (i) preventing the spread of disease; and (ii) preventing serious damage to livestock, foodstuffs for livestock, crops, vegetables, fruit, growing timber, fisheries or inland waters." You don't need to have a copy on your peson, buy it, or even physically have one, just be aware of it. So for example if you're shooting over peas for farmer bob on his land, with his permission, with a fully licensed firewarm , and asked why, your answer is you are shooting *species listed* under the terms of the general license because farmer Bob has asked you to do so to prevent damage to his peas. The general license is far far ranging and will cover most winged pest/vermin shooting you wish to undertake. You, as you live in England don't now need a license to kill or sell game. If you however move to Scotland or Northern Ireland you will do. http://www.countryside-alliance.org.uk/sho...%29-order-2007/.
