simonp
I havn't seen it mentioned (but then I've not looked that hard). VW Touareg. Sensible and fun choice : V6 TDI FUN choice : 5ltr V10 TDI :-) I moved to one from an M3 cab and tbh I love it (its no M3, but its bloody nice). Just don't get a pansy boy X5 for gods sake. Theres loads of the previous model on autotrader from 7.5K up to 20K+ depending on miles.
ME
I own a 2.5td pajero lwb and also a 200tdi defender 90 . I love 'em both . But have a look at this !! all the best yis yp YP, Great clip. We calculated on Sunday that we had about 75 stone of the Essex Mafia in Mungs X5. I reckon if we all got in a Panda (oo-er) the car would firstly go nowhere and worse still we wouldn't be able to get out !!!
Mungler
75 stone? Who you kidding Fast though innit And goes round corners to boot. In my considered opinion I reckon it is the best all round automobile "ever" (delivered in a Clarksonesque stylee).
Hewey
Mungler, Got to admit although I've never been in one I do quite like the X5 (Hope no one on the Discovery Owners Club see's that I said that.!!!) But doubt LV will get one for 10K. I'm on my 3rd Discovery now, although the first one (it was about 10 years old) had a few problems the others a V8 Auto and now a TD5 Auto have been great, obviously not as "Car Like" as the X5 or other "Soft Roaders" but comfy none the less and extremely capable. The good thing about Landy's are that if they do go wrong then as long as you stay away from Main Dealers they are fairly cheap to repair and service, there are a lot of Specialists around and loads of parts and accesory supplers. I had the Major 6 year Service done on my V8 only cost £210 from a local specialist, Land Rover wanted nearly £700, so they can be run quite cheaply. Only problem is Fuel consumption on the Disco's, my TD5 Auto only gets about 23MPG, the manuals probably average about 28ish but I just think the Auto box is worth paying a bit extra at the pumps. They are a bit sluggish as standard but a quick trip to somewhere like TD5Alive soon sorts that out. (Yes Mungler I know, still not in X5 territory) LV. If you don't need a "Real" 4x4 I wouldn't discount the X-Trail straight away, for what they are they're not bad and better off road than most think, especially if fitted with a set of A/T's with the benefit of high 30's MPG and reasonable performance. Another couple of options which I don't think anyone has mentioned and I will no doubt get shot for saying.... Kia Sorrento.?? I had an XS model, came with all the gadgets, Full Leather Cruise, etc. etc. etc, was surprised just how good an all-round car it was and it was very good off-road too. OK I only kept it for 7 weeks because the Land Rover bug just would't go away but a decent enough True 4x4 none the less. Don't get the XE though as it's not full time 4x4. XS or XT if you want the toys and decent 4x4 system. Another although with very little "Street Cred" is the Hyundia Terracan, a lot of car for the money if you can stand the looks and aren't a "Badge Snob". Good Luck anyway. OldBill
Pajero- I know you say it's too big so get a SWB. You will get a very nice and underrated 4x4 for that money.
