Just what do we pay taxes for?

One of my drivers came into work this morning recounted this story.

04:50 this morning he's awoken by noise outside his flat. He looks out the window to see three men nicking the lead sheeting off of Barclays Bank roof, in Addlestone Surrey. He phoned '999' and told them what he was witnessing. They said that they would despatch somebody immediately, as it was a crime in progress and they had a very good chance of making an arrest. Addlestone Police Station is a maximum of 800yards away from the bank and takes no more than 45 second to drive - even at legal speeds without blue flashing lights!

Two plod finally attended the sceen at 05:10 - some 12 minutes after the three blokes had driven off in their old Transit van. Anybody familular with this area could take a pretty good guess at where they went next (ie a field with lots of caravans in it) but no doubt they won't go there as it may be politically insensive.

In American towns, the chief of Police (Sheriff) is directly elected and if he proves to be in-competent, he gets sacked by the people it is his job to serve. I like this ideal; we should have it and the power to impeach mid-term, any official, who can't or won't do the job that they are paid public money to do.

Any takers?

Please don't misunderstand the intended target of my post. It is not Mr/Mrs Ol' Bill on the ground, it's the lack of effective management and guidence, from the 'Top' and Senior Middle mis-management, that gets my goat. The Chief Plod meister sets the force's policy, management impliment it and the sargeants' ensure that the troops follow orders. It's not rocket science - there are tracable paths of in-aptitude & in-efficiency in most if not all public bodies - it's not their money, they have no directly 'paying' customer and no share holders with the ability to vote them off the board, when they fail to deliver. The system is designed to fail and hide those responsible from taking the blame they deserve.

I guess if there was more of them on the street instead of wasting time filling in reports so that the government can say that they're meeting targets then response times could be improved.

I saw a dodgy looking bloke coming out of next door and was a bit concerned as hadn't seen him before (but there are 3 flats in the house) gave the police a call and there were 3 police cars in my street within 5 minutes, unfortunately that didn't help the bloke who'd nicked a builders wallet (which is why the door was open, opportunist thief) as two burly builders had legged it out of the flat caught him and given him a hiding  the police who asked me for a description found this very funny and then raced off to try and find him.

We had a residents meeting about our local Chavs. When put in a corner the local Inspector asked us how many police officers are on duty in Billericay (population 40,000) on a Friday or Saturday night. After many guesses from 10 upwards we were told it is actually two YES TWO for FORTY THOUSAND PEOPLE.

The room we met in was in the Police Station and had a snooker table in it. So, if there are two officers on duty.....and it takes two to play snooker......

What a joke !!
